Penny Simkin talks about slowing the breath and the three R’s

And to slow your breath down even more (without holding it )? Remember your Ujjayi breath. Ujjayii (ocean breath) can make all the difference in the world allowing the sound to not only drown out distractions during labour (helping you to focus), but it also gives you something to latch onto.
